Today we’re making a traditional German salad. At first glance, the combination of ingredients may seem unusual – especially if you’re not familiar with German cuisine. But don’t let that fool you! This salad is wonderfully refreshing, tangy, and full of flavor, with each ingredient complementing the others perfectly.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Apples – I prefer the sour apple varieties, but sweet can be used too
- Beets – fresh or pickled from a jar
- Spring onions
- Pickles
- Herring – marinated herring salad
- Olive oil – extra virgin
- Celery leaves – or parsley leaves
- Sea salt – to taste as herring is usually pretty salty
How to prepare German Herring Salad?

2nd: Cut the herring fillets, add into the salad bowl. Then, sprinkle with celery juice, olive oil, lemon juice and salt. Cool in the fridge for 10 minutes, optional. Then, serve.
